DIY Halloween: Spirit Jugs

As Halloween approaches, it’s the perfect time to dive into some spooky, yet simple, decorating projects. These Spirit Jugs are a fantastic way to bring some ghostly charm to your home, and the best part? They’re incredibly easy to make and cost next to nothing. We first came across this idea a couple of years ago, and given how much milk our kids drink, gathering the materials was no trouble at all. If you’re a dad looking for a fun project to do with your children, this is the perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit!

What You’ll Need:

• Clean 4 pint milk jugs: Don’t worry if you don’t have enough yet—just start saving those empties now!

• Black permanent marker: Any thick black marker will do the trick for creating bold, spooky designs.

• Craft knife: Essential for cutting precise holes in the jugs. A utility knife will work just as well if you have one handy.

• String of clear low-wattage Christmas lights: These lights will bring your spirit jugs to life with an eerie glow. Battery-operated lights work too, especially if you want to place your jugs in different spots around the garden.

Instructions:

Step 1: Create the Faces
Start by drawing some spooky faces on your clean milk jugs using the black permanent marker. Get creative here—whether you want your spirits to be scary or silly, the choice is yours! Let your kids join in the fun by suggesting different facial expressions. This is a great way to engage their imaginations and get them excited about the project.

Step 2: Colour in the Faces
Once the outlines are done, hand over the jugs to your kids. They can use markers to fill in the faces, adding their own personal touches. While they’re busy with this, you can take the opportunity to bake a batch of Halloween-themed cookies. After all, what’s a crafting session without some tasty treats on the side?

Step 3: Cut Holes for the Lights
This step is best left to the adults. Using the craft knife, carefully cut a hole in the lower backside of each jug. The hole should be roughly the size of a half £1—just big enough to fit the lights through. If you’re unsure about the size, err on the side of making it slightly larger; you want to ensure that the lights can be easily inserted.

Step 4: Insert the Lights
Now it’s time to bring your jugs to life! Line up your ghostly creations, and stuff several lights into each one. Be sure to distribute the lights evenly inside the jugs so that they glow uniformly. This is where the magic happens, as the faces you’ve drawn will suddenly light up with an eerie, captivating glow.

Step 5: Display Your Spirit Jugs
Finally, place your glowing spirit jugs along your walkway or front porch to greet trick-or-treaters and visitors. They’ll create a fun and festive atmosphere that’s sure to delight everyone who sees them. If you’ve opted for battery-operated lights, you have the freedom to spread the jugs around your yard, creating a hauntingly beautiful scene. But the advantage of using a single string of Christmas lights is the simplicity—just plug them into one outlet, and all your jugs will light up together.

Additional Tips and Ideas:

• Personalize Your Jugs: Don’t stop at faces—let your kids add additional decorations like stickers, glitter, or paint. You could even write spooky messages on the back of the jugs.

• Vary the Sizes: If you have different sizes of milk jugs or even plastic bottles, incorporate them to create a variety of ghostly figures. Smaller bottles can be used to make mini spirits for tabletops or window sills.

• Weatherproofing: If you’re placing the jugs outside and it’s particularly wet, consider sealing the marker lines with a clear coat of spray paint. This will help preserve the designs through all kinds of autumn weather.

• Creative Lighting: Experiment with different types of lights, such as coloured LEDs or flickering candles, to give your spirit jugs a unique look. Battery-operated tea lights can be a safe and effective alternative for homes with young children.

• Weather dependent you may need to consider weighing the jugs down with something like pebbles or sand.

This project is a fantastic way to bring some Halloween fun into your home without breaking the bank. Plus, it’s a great excuse to spend some quality time with your kids. So gather your supplies, get creative, and enjoy the process of making these glowing spirit jugs. They’re sure to be a hit with your family and anyone who comes to visit during the spooky season!
