Here’s a simple and fun DIY project to do with your kids—creating a bird feeder using an old milk or juice carton. This eco-friendly activity is perfect for a crafty afternoon and will bring some feathered friends to your garden!
What You’ll Need:
- Milk or Juice Carton
- Construction Paper
- Crayons or Markers
- Old Shoelace
- Glue
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Birdseed
Instructions:
-
Clean the Carton: Start by rinsing out the carton thoroughly to make sure it’s clean.
-
Cut the Opening: Use scissors to cut out a square section of the carton, leaving a few inches at the bottom where the birdseed will sit.
-
Prepare the Paper: Trace the shape of the carton onto construction paper and cut it out.
-
Decorate: Let your child use crayons, markers, or glitter to decorate the construction paper. Make sure it’s completely dry before moving to the next step.
-
Glue the Paper: Once the paper is decorated, glue it to the sides of the carton. Allow the glue to dry properly.
-
Create the Hanger: Use a sharp pencil to poke a hole in the top of the carton. Thread the shoelace through the hole and knot it securely, so the feeder can hang up.
-
Add a Perch: Poke another hole near the bottom of the feeder and push the pencil through to create a perch for the birds.
-
Fill with Birdseed: Let your little one fill the feeder with birdseed. Guide them in choosing a safe place to hang the feeder.
-
Wait for the Birds: Hang the feeder up and wait for the birds to come and enjoy!
This project is not only a great way to recycle materials but also teaches kids about nature and responsibility as they care for the birds that visit.
